Medtronic, Cosmo to conduct GI Genius trial on Apple Vision Pro

Cosmo Pharmaceuticals today announced plans to initiate the first usability study connecting the Medtronic GI Genius with Apple Vision Pro.

Next month, Cosmo plans to initiate the usability of a medical device software application connecting the Medtronic GI Genius intelligent endoscopy module, an AI-powered platform for gastrointestinal endoscopy, with Apple Vision Pro.

Dr. Irving Waxman will conduct the study at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. The study evaluates the real-time use of this innovative technology during live colonoscopy procedures.

Cosmo designed the software application specifically for use with Apple Vision Pro. The company says it could enable physicians to visualize AI-generated insights from GI Genius directly through Apple Vision Pro. This allows them to view important information without looking away from the operative screen.

According to a news release, this marks the first investigation of the innovative, spacial experience in gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy. Cosmo expects the study to boost its planned FDA submission, expected shortly after the study concludes.

GI Genius, a computer-aided polyp detection system powered by AI, has been available in the U.S. since 2021. It was designed to redefine GI screening by assisting gastroenterologists in performing colonoscopies.

Medtronic serves as the exclusive global distributor for the GI Genius platform. GI Genius’ latest iteration, rolled out by Cosmo last year, includes the FDA-cleared ColonPRO software. This AI application helps identify potential polyps and standardize quality metric reporting during colorectal cancer screenings.

Commentary from Cosmo/Medtronic and the lead study investigator

Giovanni Di Napoli, CEO of Cosmo (and former head of the Medtronic Gastrointestinal unit), said: “This is a historic moment for Cosmo and for the field of endoscopy. By integrating the GI Genius module with Apple Vision Pro, we will be delivering an entirely new experience – intelligent, and intuitive. Developing this application for Apple Vision Pro has been an extraordinary journey, and the result will be a fusion of clinical AI experiences and spatial computing. This is what the future of medicine looks like: real-time AI, embedded naturally into the physician’s workflow by blending digital content with the physical world.

We’re proud to be at the forefront of this transformation – and excited about what’s possible when world-class technology and medical innovation come together.”

Waxman added: “We are thrilled to be the first in the world to evaluate this technology in the endoscopy suite. What Cosmo has built by connecting the GI Genius module with Apple Vision Pro is extraordinary. It has the potential to revolutionize how we practice – by giving us AI-powered insights exactly when and where we need them. This is not just an incremental improvement – it’s a complete reimagining of procedural medicine, and I’m proud that Rush is leading the way.”
