Medtronic

is eliminating 44 jobs in Carslbad, California, according to a mass layoff notice filed with the state.
The permanent job cuts take effect starting on or around May 19 at 2101 Faraday Ave., Medtronic told the California Employment Development Department.
FDA records list that address as a facility for Nellcor Puritan Bennett Corp., a respiratory monitoring and ventilator brand that Medtronic acquired when it purchased Covidien.
In 2022, Medtronic said it wanted to spin off the Medical Surgical portfolio’s Patient Monitoring and Respiratory Interventions businesses, but no buyers emerged.
Instead, Medtronic said earlier this year that it planned to exit the ventilator market, saying the move would eliminate up to 40 jobs in Ireland. At the same time, Medtronic said Bob White, an EVP and president of the Medical Surgical portfolio, was leaving the company in a new round of reorganization.
Former Respiratory Interventions President Ariel Mactavish left Medtronic in March. Before announcing her departure, she visited the Carslbad facility, saying she was “proud to have worked with the men and women here who have passionately promoted the best respiratory care for patients around the world.”

In March, Medtronic told the California Employment Development Department that it “developed plans to restructure and relocate certain operations at the facility.”
Medtronic’s notice listed affected job titles that include R&D engineers, software engineers, mechanical design engineers, systems engineers, electrical engineers, and roles in human factors design, product planning, projet management, marketing and cybersecurity.
“Medtronic continually evaluates its operations and aligns our resources with our highest strategic priorities,” a spokesperson said in an email to MassDevice. “As part of those efforts, the company will reduce roles across our global workforce. These decisions are never easy, and we’re taking great care to treat all impacted employees with dignity and respect. Medtronic will follow fair, consistent processes and provide comprehensive transitional resources to impacted employees during this time.”
Medtronic is the world’s largest device manufacturer when ranked by revenue, but it’s unclear exactly how its employment levels have changed through recent reorganizations because it does not disclose precise employment counts.
