ICU Medical closes Minnesota facility, cuts 83 jobs

July 16, 2024 By Sean Whooley

This image shows the logo of ICU Medical.ICU Medical (Nasdaq: ICUI) filed with the state of Minnesota to confirm the termination of 83 employees following a facility closure.

Minnesota’s State Rapid Response Team received a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) letter from the maker of technologies for infusion therapy, oncology and critical care dated today, July 16. The letter outlined plans to terminate all employees at its service and distribution facility in Oakdale, Minnesota.

ICU Medical continues to scale back the footprint in Minnesota and elsewhere that it acquired through its $2.35 billion purchase of Smiths Medical in 2022.

This marks the second facility closure in Oakdale in the past 12 months for ICU Medical. Last August, the company confirmed the closure of its facility located at 3400 Granada Ave. N., in Oakdale. That affected 81 employees. This latest closure comes at 3350 Granada Ave., N., Suite 100, in Oakdale — and marks the overall closure of the Oakdale location. The facility was also at the center of significant recalls for Smiths Medical syringe pumps.

ICU Medical also elected to close a New Hampshire plant belonging to its Smiths Medical unit in April 2024. This came as part of an effort to consolidate following its 2022 acquisition of Smiths. That closure meant a headcount cut of roughly 220 employees. (Here’s a list of all the major layoffs that have happened in medtech over the past couple of years.)

The company’s WARN letter said it expects the closure to be permanent. It made the decision after a thorough analysis of operations and its larger U.S. service footprint. The company expects to begin employment terminations on Sept. 16, 2024, and carry them out through Dec. 31, 2024. No affected employees have union representation and none affected by the action have any bumping rights.
