Horizion Surgical Systems announced that it appointed Dr. Rajesh K. Rajpal as its chief strategy and medical officer (CSO & CMO).
Rajpal brings a track record that includes experience as a recognized surgeon, innovator and industry executive. He joins the Santa Monica, California-based surgical robotics developer after time spent advancing ophthalmic technologies and guiding companies through clinical, regulatory and commercial milestones, according to a news release.
Horizon said his role includes shaping its strategy, clinical development and long-term growth efforts.
“We are honored to welcome Raj to the Horizon leadership team. His deep expertise and vision will be invaluable as we prepare for our first-in-human study and advance toward FDA approval and commercialization,” said Dr. Jean-Pierre Hubschman, CEO of Horizon Surgical Systems.
Horizon aims to advance microsurgery with automated, AI-enabled robotic technology. The company says its Polaris system leverages state-of-the-art robotics, advanced medical imaging and AI. It aims to extend the capabilities of surgeons beyond their current limitations.
Last fall, the company raised $30 million in its Series A round to support the development of Polaris for eye surgery.
“I am excited to join Horizon at such a pivotal time in its journey. The Polaris robotic platform represents a transformative step in ophthalmic surgery, and I look forward to contributing to its success for both surgeons and patients worldwide,” said Rajpal.
