
Hologic Inc. (NSDQ:HOLX) won a $32.3 million contract with the U.S. Dept. of Defense for its pap tests and supplies related to the kits, while Henry Schein Inc. (NSDQ:HSIC) landed a $28.8 million deal for general dental supplies.
Bedford, Mass.-based Hologic was the only bidder for its year-long contract, which calls for it to supply the the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps with its ThinPrep test kits for human papilloma virus, according to the Defense Dept.
The contract is a boost for Hologic‘s diagnostic segment, which makes the ThinPrep test, after third-quarter sales for the division dipped slightly. The company posted net income of $27.4 million on sales of $420.7 million during the three months ended June 26, down from $30.8 million in profits on sales of $439.2 million during the year-ago quarter.
Hologic is currently waiting for answer from the Food & Drug Administration regarding approval for its Selenia Dimensions 3D mammography system, which is being discussed today by the agency’s Radiological Devices Advisory Panel.
Melville, N.Y.-based Henry Schein’s one-year, $28.8 million contract calls for it to distribute general dental supplies to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and federal civilian agencies. The Defense Dept. selected the company from a pool of 10 other bidders.
Henry Schein concluded another year-long contract with the Defense Dept. worth $864 million in August. That’s about half of the company’s typical quarterly sales.
