Former Abiomed CEO is running for governor of Massachusetts

Former Abiomed CEO Michael Minogue announced today that he is running for governor of Massachusetts.

Minogue made his announcement public on LinkedIn. He is running as a Republican, having long been a donor for the party. Minogue will seek the nomination to face incumbent Maura Healey (D).

“I am officially launching my campaign for governor of Massachusetts,” Minogue wrote.

I’ve been blessed with a life of service – from leading soldiers as an Infantry Platoon Leader and Army Ranger to serving as CEO of Abiomed for 19 years, where we developed the world’s smallest heart pumps, saved hundreds of thousands of lives, and created jobs here in MA. Renee and I have raised our five kids here, and we know firsthand how much promise our state holds. … Together, we can deliver the kind of leadership Massachusetts deserves.”

Minogue spent 19 years as CEO of Abiomed, maker of the Impella heart pump. Abiomed’s Impella heart pump portfolio treats coronary artery disease and heart failure. He departed after leading the company through its $16.6 billion acquisition by Johnson & Johnson in 2022.

Healey, his potential opponent, should he earn the nomination, has herself taken steps to advance the state’s strong medtech footprint that included companies like Abiomed, which is based in Danvers. Last year, she signed into law the Mass Leads Act, aimed at making Massachusetts a global leader in emerging industries like climatetech and applied AI, while also building on the success of the state’s life sciences sector.
