Segan has a long history in the medical device industry. Prior to joining the FDA, he was the managing director and founder of Medical Scientific Advisors. He has held numerous roles of varying responsibility throughout the industry, including chief medical officer at Olympus, chief medical officer of medical devices R&D at Johnson & Johnson, chief medical officer at Covidien (now part of Medtronic), and more.
In an emailed statement to MassDevice, an FDA spokesperson said Segan is trained in general and advanced minimally invasive surgery and practiced surgery in the U.S. Army, including a combat tour in Afghanistan.
“I am committed to servant leadership and, most importantly, I am passionate about patients having access to innovative medical technology that is clinically relevant, effective, and safe,” Segan said in an FDA statement shared with MassDevice.
He officially began his new role on September 22, replacing William Maisel, who retired earlier this year. Owen Faris, principal deputy director of OPEQ, was acting director following Maisel’s retirement.
OPEQ, part of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, is responsible for the review processes and safety monitoring of medical devices.
