Cook Medical, Mendaera collab on handheld robotics for needle-based interventions

April 23, 2025 By Sean Whooley

Cook Medical MendaeraCook Medical today announced a collaboration with Mendaera to create solutions for needle-based interventions with handheld robotics.

San Mateo, California–based Mendaera develops a handheld robotic interventional platform. Its technology includes robotics, AI, real-time imaging and virtual connectivity. The company designed it for accessibility across specialties and sites, helping to meet the growing demand for needle-based interventions. Through a collaboration announced last year, its system utilizes the Ultrasound-on-Chip technology developed by Butterfly Network.

The company also purchased the telepresence technology developed by Avail Medsystems earlier this year, hiring employees from the now-shuttered company as well. Last fall, Mendaera also raised $73 million to further support its technology.

Cook Medical and Mendaera plan to create cutting-edge solutions for needle-based interventions in urological procedures. They aim to combine Cook’s EchoTip needle technology with the Mendaera handheld robotics with ultrasound guidance.

Under the collaboration, the companies expect to integrate a trocar needle with EchoTip technology into Mendaera’s instrumentation. They expect the combination to further improve physician workflows for percutaneous procedures.

“By combining Cook’s needles with Mendaera’s robotics, we can bring amazing advancements to urological procedures,” said DJ Sirota, SVP of Cook’s MedSurg division. “We are thrilled to work with a company in the robotics space, especially because fit-for-purpose disposables paired with robots will be the future of healthcare. … We are setting the standard for minimally invasive procedures through our joint effort.”

Mendaera CCO Eric Davidson said the combination of technologies further streamlines setup and ease of use.

“Deep collaborations with partners like Cook enable us to offer value-add product offerings to help healthcare providers do more for their patients,” said Davidson. “We are excited to work with Cook on pairing their world class instrumentation with our first-of-its-kind robotics platform.”
