Cambridge, U.K.-based CMR — one of MassDevice’s “10 surgical robotics companies you need to know” — said its Versius surgical robotic system has now treated more than 45,000 patients worldwide ahead of its commercial expansion. The company says this reflects sustained multi-specialty clinical adoption of Versius. It also says this positions CMR as the second-most widely used robotic surgery platform globally, behind leader Intuitive. (Intuitive, which has pioneered robotic surgery since the 1990s, has treated over 20 million patients.)

CMR announced its latest milestone at the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) 2026 Annual Meeting in Tampa, Florida.
Versius became the first multi-port, soft tissue general robotic-assisted surgical device to gain clearance through the FDA’s de novo process in 2024. CMR added FDA clearance for its next-generation Versius Plus system in cholecystectomy in December 2025. That offering is now set to launch.
The company says the conference marks its “formal introduction to U.S. surgeons.” It plans to begin building partnerships with hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) to support a wider rollout.
Versius is a small-scale surgical robotic system that features collaborative arms and bedside units for direct patient access. CMR Surgical designed Versius to enable surgeons to perform more minimal access surgery. Its minimally invasive approach assists surgeons in accessing the lungs, thymus and esophagus.
The robot has been adopted in hospitals across more than 30 countries as CMR turns its focus to the U.S.
