Surgical robot technology developer CMR Surgical announced today that CEO Supratim Bose stepped down for personal reasons.

The company appointed Massimiliano Colella, its chief commercial officer since December 2023, as interim CEO. Bose, who joined as CEO in March 2023, remains involved with CMR Surgical as vice chair of the board.

Bose originally joined CMR Surgical a month before he became CEO. He served as a senior advisor to the CEO at the time, Per Vegard Nerseth. The company said in a news release that he supported the business on its journey to bring minimall access robotic surgery to more patients around the world. CMR expects him to continue to bring his medtech expertise to his role on the board.

Cambridge, U.K.–based CMR Surgical, meanwhile, expects to coninue accelerating its commercial installations of the Versius surgical robot.

Versius is a small-scale system with collaborative arms and bedside units for direct patient access. It also features freedom of port placement to best suit the needs of each patient. CMR Surgical designed Versius to enable surgeons to perform more minimal access surgery. Its minimally invasive approach assists surgeons accessing the lungs, thymus and esophagus.

“I have worked with reputed organizations in the medtech industry for over four decades, and I can say it has been a privilege to lead the CMR organization,” Bose said. “It is now time for me to transition into a board role as vice chair of the CMR board, and Massimiliano is the best person to take over my responsibility. I am pleased that we have someone of his caliber to lead the business as we continue our growth journey. With Massimiliano leading the business, a disruptive product, and exceptional people in the business, I am confident that CMR can transform surgery for good for all surgeons and patients around the world.”

More about CMR Surgical interim CEO Massimiliano Colella

Colella joined CMR Surgical from Evercare Group, where he served as group CEO and a board member. He has more than 30 years of senior healthcare leadership experience, which includes senior roles at Johnson & Johnson and Smith+Nephew.

At J&J, he held responsibility for all medical device companies within the Central Eastern Europe and Emerging Markets regions. He also served as president of the J&J corporate legal board across all sectors in the Czech Republic. At Smith+Nephew, he held a number of posts, including EVP and president of Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Canada. There, he also held responsibility for driving the surgical robotics unit.

“I am honoured to lead CMR and make sure we can seize our opportunity to offer hospitals and patients choice when deciding to start a surgical robotics program,” Colella said. “I have worked for large medical device businesses, and a hospital group, but this is a truly unique opportunity to lead a Company that has exceptional people, and an excellent product.”

Dan Moore, CMR Surgical board chair, touted Colella’s “significant medtech leadership experience.” He said the company is pleased to have someone of Colella’s stature take over, with both leadership experience and a passion for the company and surgical robotics.

“We look forward to working closely with Massimiliano to help CMR transform surgery for patients around the world as we open new markets and launch further Versius product advancements,” Moore siad. “As a board, we continue to support CMR for the long-term to ensure the company can reach its full potential. I would like to thank Supratim for his extensive contributions to CMR as CEO, and we look forward to continuing to work with him on the board.”
