MedTech Monday: Philips bids on ultrasound-guided gene therapy
Philips bids on ultrasound-guided gene therapy: Delivering DNA sequences to cells for gene therapy is already being investigated, with the current approaches relying on viruses and smart nanoparticles as vectors for gene transfer. But Philips and GlyGenix Therapeutics, out of Woodbridge, Conn., plan on taking another approach, hoping that the large molecules can be pushed to their destination using ultrasound. Specifically, the pre-clinical trials will study the technology, known as ultrasound-mediated plasmid DNA (pDNA) delivery, on Glycogen Storage Disease Type 1a (GSD-1a) that exhibits a defective G6Pase gene.
Covidien gets the power with $64 million acquisition
Covidien continues to peck away at the smorgasbord of merger and acquisitions with its latest deal, a $64 million buyout of Power Medical Interventions Inc.
The Mansfield-based medical device colossus paid $2.08 per share and assumed all outstanding debts from the Langhorn, Pa.-based company, which makes computer-assisted, power-actuated surgical cutting and stapling products. The all-cash deal is expected to close Sept. 25.
Covidien Sues C.R. Bard subsidiary over mesh patent
Covidien filed suit against Davol Inc., alleging that the Cranston, R.I.-based company infringed on one of its patents.
The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Delaware, contends that Davol infringed on a Covidien patent with its Sorbafix mesh fixation device.
Covidien is asking the court to enjoin Davol, a subsidiary of C.R. Bard Corp., from continuing to produce and sell the device and is seeking compensatory damages.
Microline Pentax acquires Starion Instruments
Microline Pentax acquired Sunnyvale, Calif. -based Starion Instruments for an undisclosed amount.
Beverly-based Microline Pentax said the deal will expand its reach into the cardiology and ear, nose & throat markets.
Microline makes laparoscopic surgical devices. Starion’s devices feature a so-called “tissue welding” technology that uses direct heat and pressure to simultaneously seal and divide soft tissue and vessels.
FDA hops onto Serica’s SeriScaffold
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration hopped onto Serica Technologies Inc.’s SeriScaffold product, granting the silk-based surgical mesh clearance to hit the market.
The Medford-based growth-stage device maker’s flagship product is designed to repair and remodel damaged connective tissue, avoiding the erosion and scar formation that can result from surgery.
