The Boston Globe reports today that Mass General Brigham plans hundreds of layoffs amid a budget shortfall.

According to the report, it marks the largest layoff in the history of the organization — Massachusetts’ largest private employer. Mass General Brigham declined to provide the amount of employees affected, but plans to save at least $200 million annually as a result, according to the report.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital both made it onto U.S. News & World Report’s Honor Roll of the 20 best hospitals in the United States in 2024–25. The health system plays a significant role in the ecosystem of the Massachusetts medtech and biotech hub.

The Globe says Mass General Brigham plans to begin the cuts this week, followed by another round next month. In an email to employees obtained by the newspaper, Mass General Brigham CEO Dr. Anne Klibanski said the company had to take the action now “to stabilize our financial health.”

According to the report, the layoffs target administrative and management levels of the hospital organization. It doesn’t extend to patient-facing staff or frontline workers.

“This decision is necessary despite years of diligently promoting a culture of responsible resource stewardship and developing initiatives that generate diversified sources of revenue,” the organization’s statement reads, according to WCVB. “We recognize the impact that this difficult decision will have on our impacted employees and Mass General Brigham is providing market competitive severance packages and benefits coverage to them. We are grateful for the contributions of these colleagues and the value that all our employees bring to our organization each and every day.

“Providing unparalleled access to the highest-quality care and groundbreaking treatments demands critical investment and will require us to manage our operations and financial health with the same precision and innovation that we apply to patient care, research, and education. The steps we are taking now to evolve our organization will play a critical role in ensuring that Mass General Brigham continues to lead, innovate, and transform the future of healthcare for the benefit of everyone.”
