The investment aims to expand the site’s R&D capabilities to further strengthen its role as a global center for cardiovascular innovation. The site currently produces drug-coated devices, vascular balloons and esophageal stents.
Ireland’s government, through IDA Ireland, its foreign direct investment arm, supported the investment with funding. It includes purpose-built laboratories to enhance the ability of the Galway teams to design, develop and test next-generation medical technologies.
Expanded capabilities support priority programs across structural heart, cardiovascular and endoscopy at Boston Scientific. R&D in Galway also extends to heart failure and renal denervation technologies, according to a news release.
Boston Scientific’s history in Ireland goes back more than 30 years. The company has more than 7,000 employees across sites in Galway, Cork and Clonmel.

This marks the company’s latest significant expansion in Ireland and in Galway. In 2022, it invested $118 million in the Galway site, looking to create more than 300 jobs.
About a year later, in 2023, Boston Scientific poured more than $86 million into its Clonmel campus, adding 400 jobs.
“We are seeing strong momentum across our cardiovascular business, and this investment reflects the important role the Galway site plays in that progress,” said Lance Bates, EVP and president, Interventional Cardiology and Vascular Therapies, Boston Scientific. “The local team is delivering complex, highly collaborative work that is advancing meaningful innovation for patients. The strength of the site, the talent in Ireland and the support of the Irish Government and IDA Ireland give us confidence to continue investing in our future growth.”
Ireland continues to serve as a place for medtech companies to expand R&D capabilities, with Siemens Healthineers announcing an R&D expansion outside of Dublin earlier this year.
