Boston Scientific hit with cybersecurity incident

August 26, 2026 By Skyler Rivera

This is the logo of Boston Scientific.A global outage is affecting Boston Scientific’s network communications, the company told MassDevice.

“We are currently experiencing a global network outage. During this early stage of assessment, we are working to understand the potential impact and restore normal operations,” a Boston Scientific spokesperson told MassDevice.

The next day, the company filed with the SEC to report that it had “identified a cybersecurity incident affecting certain of its information technology systems that has resulted in a global disruption to the company’s operations.”

Boston Scientific said in the filing:

“Upon detection, the company activated its incident response protocols and began an investigation with the assistance of third-party cybersecurity experts to assess and to contain the threat. The incident has caused, and is expected to continue to cause, disruptions and limitations of access to certain of the company’s information systems and business applications that support aspects of the company’s operations, including the ability to process and ship customer orders. While the Company is working diligently to restore affected functions and systems access, the timeline for a full restoration is not yet known.”

The company is still investigating the cybersecurity incident and its impacts, so it has not yet determined whether the incident will have a material impact, according to the SEC filing.

On Thursday, the company said the incident continues to affect “certain information technology systems”  and that it’s still experiencing operational disruptions.

“The incident is affecting access to certain operating systems and business applications, including the ability to manufacture products, as well as process and ship customer orders,” Boston Scientific said.

The incident has had no impact on implantable cardiac rhythm management device function, the company said, and there’s currently no evidence of an increased cybersecurity risk of data transferring from these systems to electronic medical records.

BSX shares are down more than 3% to $47.88 apiece in pre-market trading today.

The Irish Examiner first reported on the outage after reviewing an email sent to more than 7,000 employees across Boston Scientific’s three Irish plants.

“We are currently experiencing a global outage affecting network communications across our Ireland sites and other locations worldwide,” the email said.

“Our local and global IT teams are actively working together to understand the issue and restore services as soon as possible. We will share a further update as soon as more information becomes available.”

Day shift employees at the medtech giant’s Cork plant were sent home with full pay, according to the report. Night shift staff are waiting to be informed if they should report to work, the Irish Examiner said.

Boston Scientific has an estimated 59,000 global employees with more than 7,000 employed across its Galway, Clonmel and Cork plants in Ireland.

This story originally ran Aug. 25, 2026. Updated on Aug. 26 and Aug. 28 with Boston Scientific’s update with the SEC and an update on the scope of the outage. Editor-in-chief Chris Newmarker contributed to this report.
