The Marlborough, Massachusetts–based company spent $188.8 million on Dec. 1 to buy the property at 1 Boston Scientific Way from Black Bear MN LLC, an entity related to the developer Ryan Cos., according to an electronic certificate of real estate value filed with the state.
The facility opened in October. A CBS Minnesota story at the time noted that the building is partially made of 14,000 cubic yards of concrete, weighing 57 million lbs — as heavy as four Eiffel Towers.
Elsewhere in Maple Grove — a suburb northwest of Minneapolis — Boston Scientific is doubling the size of its Weaver Lake Road campus to 170,000 ft². Meanwhile, the company is in the process of selling a 225,900 ft² campus at 10700 Bren Road W. in Minnetonka. The company also has a presence in Arden Hills in the northeast metro.
The expansions come as Boston Scientific continues to enjoy the success of its cardiology products, including the Farapulse pulsed field ablation system for treating AFib and the Watchman LAA closure device. According to BTIG analysts, analysts, Boston Scientific aims to become the top player in the electrophysiology space: “Pricing has been stable and the company intends to continue innovating to maintain its market leader status in PFA even as competitor systems come to market.”
Most Boston Scientific employees focused on Farapulse are based in Arden Hills. A company spokesperson said the new Maple Grove facility will primarily serve non-manufacturing employees working in the company’s Cardiovascular (Peripheral Interventions and Interventional Cardiology Therapies) businesses.
