BionX inks EU distribution deal with Ottobock

December 9, 2015 By Fink Densford

BionX Medical TechnologiesBionX, previously known as BiOM, said today it inked a collaborative deal with Otto Bock Healthcare to exclusively distribute the BiOM prosthetic ankle in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Scandinavian markets.

The BiOM prosthetic ankle is the only commercially available mechatronic ankle prosthetic with ‘powered propulsion,’ Bedford, Mass.-based BionX said. The bionic ankle uses computer processors to adjust the ankle’s stiffness and propulsive torque to emulate muscle function.

“We are very pleased about our partnership with this innovative company. BionX and Ottobock are a good fit. Our shared goal is to keep offering new possibilities to amputees through innovative products and personalized fitting options, helping them be more mobile in their everyday life, work and leisure time,” Ottobock prosthetics biz head Dr. Helmut Pfuhl said in a press release.

“We are very excited about our partnership with Ottobock, a pioneer and market leader in orthotics and prosthetics. This partnership will further expand our ability to offer normalized limb function and improved quality of life to enable more people around the world to realize their full potential,” CEO Dr. Charles Carignan said in a prepared statement.

“I’m very confident and pleased that our local Sales and Marketing organizations in the selected countries are well prepared and eager to contribute successfully to this partnership. Ottobock has been well established in those countries with its own sales organizations for many decades now and we act with the suitable strength of a local player supported by the international structure of the Ottobock Group,” Ottobock Western Europe region prez Taras Rebet said in prepared remarks.

BionX rebranded in October, going from BiOM to the moniker BioniX Medical Technologies. The change is the 2nd for the firm, which moved from the name iWalk to BiOM previously.

BionX said the change was to “better reflect its commitment to delivering bionic solutions that address critical unmet needs in the market,” according to a press release.
