
The brain-computer interface (BCI) developer said the new appointment will help shape the clinical strategy its advanced neurotech platform.
Ryu, a board-certified neurosurgeon, serves as chair of neurosurgery at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. He holds adjunct professorships in electrical engineering and neurosurgery at Stanford University as well. In his time in the Stanford Neuroprosthetics Laboratory, Ryu has co-authored more than 80 peer-reviewed BCI publications.
Austin, Texas-based Paradromics said Ryu’s role includes guiding clinical decisions related to research, design and the healthcare ecosystem. His appointment comes as the company works to bring its Connexus BCI system through the FDA approval process into commercialization.
“I’ve been approached by other BCI companies, but I wasn’t confident they could deliver,” said Ryu. “Paradromics stood out as the company most likely to succeed – and to do so soon – thanks to its exceptional team and foundational neurotech platform.”
Connexus has the potential to help patients communicate after losing the ability to speak and control computer devices. It translates recorded brain signals into actionable health data. The fully implantable BCI can record from single neurons, using durable materials and packaging. Advantages could include the ability to obtain high-resolution data over long periods of time. This data can enable complex applications like decoding intended speech.
