Baxter turns to an automation company for its new CEO

Baxter International (NYSE: BAX) announced a new CEO today, and he comes from a leader in the industrial automation space.

Andrew Hider has been CEO of Cambridge, Ontario–based ATS Corp. since 2017. He’ll move over to the corner office at Deerfield, Illinois–based Baxter no later than Sept. 3, the company said in a news release posted today.

Brent Shafer, who has been Baxter’s chair and interim CEO since José (Joe) E. Almeida’s retirement in February 2025, will transition to independent board chair after Hider joins the company.

Baxter, which manufactures a wide array of medtech for treating chronic and acute medical conditions, cited how Hider shifted ATS toward higher-growth end markets, while also delivering meaningful margin improvements. ATS’s largest end-market is now its life sciences segment, which counts medical device companies among its customers. Over five years, ATS’s adjusted revenue nearly doubled, and ATS’s stock price has more than tripled on the TSX exchange since Hider became CEO there.

Before ATS, Hider was CEO of Taylor Made Group, and he spent 10 years at various leadership roles at Danaher Corp.

“Andrew is an exceptional leader with a strong track record of operational excellence, disciplined execution and innovation. We are excited that he will be Baxter’s next CEO,” Shafer said in a news release. “Andrew’s leadership at global, diversified companies underscores his ability to manage complex operations and generate value for shareholders while maintaining a focus on quality and important customer-centric missions. We are confident he is the right executive to lead Baxter into its next chapter.”

Hider said he was energized by Baxter’s mission-driven culture and strong legacy of creating medically essential products.

“Baxter has undergone a significant transformation over the last few years, refocusing the company and better positioning it for the future,” Hider said. “I look forward to partnering with the Board and working alongside my talented future colleagues to accelerate innovation, further enhance our performance and redefine healthcare delivery while driving sustainable, long-term growth.”
