12 things you need to know about the transcatheter heart valves market

Transcatheter heart valve repair and replacement have reshaped how structural heart disease is treated, and the market behind these technologies is evolving just as quickly.

As valve design improves, delivery systems become more refined, and patient eligibility expands, transcatheter therapies are moving from niche alternatives to standard of care.

Our free Transcatheter Heart Valves Special Report — available on MassDevice — takes a deep dive into the global transcatheter heart valves market, drawing on financial filings, clinical trial data, epidemiology, medical literature, and direct disclosures from leading manufacturers, among many other sources.

This report examines where the market stands today, where it’s headed next, and which technologies and competitors are shaping its future, across transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR), and transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVr).

Join us on May 4, 2026, at our DeviceTalks Minnesota event at the University of Minnesota for our panel, “Engineering the Next Generation of Heart Valves.” We’ll explore the science and discuss the business strategy behind the space.

Below are 12 key insights from the report. For full access to five-year forecasts, competitive sales projections, emerging technology discussion, and in-depth analysis by region and segment, download the complete report here.

1. A growing patient population is expanding the potential market

Heart valve disease is rising steadily. In Europe and North America alone, aortic stenosis affected an estimated 1.5 million people in 2013, with prevalence projected to reach 2.1 million by 2025 and 3.5 million by 2050 [1], creating a large and growing patient pool for transcatheter therapies.

2. The overall market is posting solid, sustained growth

The combined transcatheter heart valves market (TAVR, TMVR and TMVr) is expected to grow at high-single-digit rates over the next five years. While TAVR remains the largest segment by revenue, TMVR and TMVr are expected to experience more rapid growth.

3. TMVR is moving from concept to commercial reality

Once a pipeline-heavy segment, TMVR is beginning to commercialize. At the beginning of the forecast period, Abbott’s Tendyne system was the only available product (with European approval). Just one year later, the Tendyne system has gained FDA approval, and Edwards Lifesciences’ Sapien M3 system has secured European approval. Additional products from companies like Medtronic are advancing through the regulatory process, positioning TMVR for broader adoption over the forecast period.

4. Edwards Lifesciences remains the anchor player in transcatheter valves

Edwards Lifesciences continues to dominate the transcatheter heart valves market, particularly in TAVR. The company is reinforcing its leadership through acquisitions and product development while expanding its presence in mitral repair and replacement, increasing competitive pressure across segments.

5. Lower-risk patient expansion is reshaping the TAVR market

Originally limited to patients with high surgical risk, clinical trial data has supported the expansion of TAVR into younger, lower-risk populations. Today, it is the standard of care across the surgical risk spectrum for aortic stenosis, fundamentally reshaping market dynamics.

6. The U.S. continues to lead global transcatheter valve sales

The U.S. accounts for more than half of global transcatheter heart valve sales and is expected to maintain its lead, with domestic growth slightly outpacing international markets over the next several years.

7. Public health trends shape regional patterns of valve disease

Mitral stenosis is most prevalent in regions where rheumatic fever persists, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. While mitral stenosis can also result from degenerative or age-related causes, efforts to prevent and treat rheumatic fever have the potential to significantly reduce the long-term burden of disease. Over time, these public health improvements may influence regional treatment needs, underscoring how epidemiology and access to care shape market dynamics.

8. Abbott leads the TMVr segment amid intensifying competition

Abbott’s MitraClip dominates the TMVr segment and is a major contributor to the company’s Structural Heart portfolio. While Abbott is expected to retain its market leadership over the forecast period, competitors such as Edwards Lifesciences (with its Pascal TMVr system) are gaining traction and are expected to steadily increase competitive pressure.

9. Device innovation is improving outcomes and adoption

Advances in valve design and delivery (such as better sealing, enhanced repositionability and smaller catheter profiles) are improving procedural success and reinforcing clinician confidence in transcatheter approaches.

10. Long-term durability data will sharpen over time

Some market constraints stem from the relative newness of the technology, particularly in younger, lower-risk populations. As the patient pool for TAVR expands to younger patients earlier in the disease process, long-term durability data are still emerging, shaping both clinical decision-making and adoption.

11. Emerging technologies are advancing across all market segments

Innovation is not limited to established leaders. Emerging companies such as Anteris Technologies, Colibri Heart Valve, and Capstan Medical are introducing differentiated approaches, from single-piece bioengineered valves to dry-tissue TAVR systems and robot-assisted TMVR delivery.

Join us on May 4, 2026, at our DeviceTalks Minnesota event at the University of Minnesota for our panel, “Engineering the Next Generation of Heart Valves.” We’ll explore the science and discuss the business strategy behind the space with innovative companies including Anteris, CroiValve, Foldax, Laplace Interventional, and TriCares.

12. Earlier intervention can improve outcomes and reduce costs

Evidence suggests that delaying TAVR in patients with clinically significant aortic stenosis worsens both clinical and economic outcomes. A 2025 study found 50% higher mortality risk and more than $36,000 in excess costs over three years among patients who delayed treatment, underscoring the value of timely intervention and continued investment into this technology [2].
