Varian profits bounce 13 percent on increased sales | Earnings roundup

Here’s a quick rundown of a few releases over the past couple days:

Varian Medical Systems profits bounce 13 percent on increased sales
Varian Medical Systems Inc. (NYSE:VAR) reported profits of $103.1 million, or 86 cents per diluted share, on revenue of $648.4 million during the three months ended March 31. That compares with profits of $91.1 million, or 73 cents per diluted share, on revenue of $585.6 million during the same period last year.

Hill-Rom reveneues rocket 37 percent
Hill-Rom Holdings Inc. (NYSE:HRC) posted a profit of $33.1 million, or 52 cents per diluted share, on sales of $402.1 million during the three months ended March 31. That compares with profits of $24.2 million, or 38 cents per diluted share, on sales of $357.1 million during the same period last year.

SurModics puts some black ink in the books despite drop in sale
SurModics Inc. (NSDQ:SRDX) reported a profit of $2.5 million, or 14 cents per diluted share, on revenue of $17.5 million during the three months ended March 31. That compares with losses of $427,000, or 2 cents per diluted share, on revenue of $18.4 million during the same period last year.

Dyax sinks deep into the red after revenues more than halve
Dyax Corp. (NSDQ:DYAX) posted a loss of $11.3 million, or 11 cents per diluted share, on sales of $8.2 million during the three months ended March 31. That compares with profits of $954,000, or 1 cent per diluted share, on sales of $20.0 million during the same period last year.

Spectranetics Corp. (NSDQ:SPNC) posted losses of $154,000, or 0 cents per diluted share, on sales of $30.4 million during the three months ended March 27. That compares with losses of $958,000, or 3 cents per diluted share, on sales of $29.0 million during the same period last year.

Hanger Orthopedic sales, profits rise
Hanger Orthopedic Group Inc. (NYSE:HGR) posted net earnings of $6.2 million, or 18 cents per diluted share, on revenue of $200.4 million during the three months ended March 31. That compares with net earnings of $4.0 million, or 12 cents per diluted share, on revenue of $178.3 million during the same period last year.

Affymetrix Inc. (NSDQ:AFFX) posted net earnings of $39,000, or 0 cents per diluted share, on revenue of $73.7 million during the three months ended March 31. That compares with losses of $9.6 million, or 14 cents per diluted share, on revenue of $80.2 million during the same period last year.

Safeguard cuts losses by more than half
Safeguard Scientifics Inc. (NYSE:SFE) reported a loss of $9.0 million, or 46 cents per diluted share, on no revenue during the three months ended March 31. That compares with a loss of $21.9 million, or $1.07 per diluted share, on no revenue during the same period last year.

Getinge Group Q4 reports sales down, but profits up in Q1
Getinge AB (STO:GETIB) posted profits of SEK 420 million, or SEK 1.75 per share, on sales of SEK 4.67 billion during the three months ended March 31. That compares with profits of SEK 400 million, or SEK 1.68 per share, on sales of SEK 4.86 billion last year.

Vitrolife reports mixed results, profits sink
Vitrolife AB (STO:VITR) posted net earnings of SEK 9 million, or SEK 0.45 per share, on sales of SEK 88 million during the three months ended March 31. That compares with profits of SEK 10 million, or SEK 0.50 per share, on sales of SEK 75 million last year.
