Vycor recalls brain access system over potential contamination

Florida medical device maker Vycor Medical got the FDA’s highest risk status for a recall of its Viewsite brain access systems after the company found "an unidentified black fiber" on a device.

Vycor recalled a single lot of a single model of the Viewsite devices, which are designed to provide surgeons access to brain tissue and provide a working channel during procedures.

Miramar Labs lands $35.8 million | Funding Roundup

Miramar Labs Inc. raised $35.8 million in a Series C funding round, leaving them just shy of their $36 million goal, according to an SEC filing.

The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company’s claim to fame is miraDry, a laser-based treatment for excessive underarm sweat. The device uses microwave energy to cook sweat glands in two hour-long noninvasive doctor’s office visits.

The company plans to use the funds to begin marketing the device, according to Xconomy.

New research with brain scans could lead to improved autism diagnosis | Research roundup

Scanning the language centers of the brain may help doctors objectively diagnose patients with autism, according to a researchers from Colombia University.

Researchers scanned the brain activity of 15 control children and 12 autistic children using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while the patients listened to recordings of their parents speaking to them, and found that autistic children showed reduced rates of activity in the superior temporal gyrus, a part of the brain associated with sentence comprehension.

Vycor picks up NovaVision assets

Vycor Medical Inc. (OTC:VYCO) bought up the assets of vision restoration therapy company NovaVision Inc. and its German subsidiary for $900,000.

Bohemia, N.Y.-based Vycor makes neurosurgery retraction devices. With NovaVisions’ assets, it picks up technology designed to treat vision loss from stoke or brain injury.
