Bankers aren’t expecting much excitement in the U.S. market for initial public offerings this year, as China spends another year at the top.
About half of the 100 capital markets execs surveyed predict growth in IPOs this year, compared to 72% of those surveyed in advance of 2011, according to BDO USA, an accounting and consulting firm.
Only 16% of those surveyed expected any growth to be "significant," while 35% expect flat growth and 15% predicted that the market will continue to slide.

Smith & Nephew falls on softer orthopedic margins | Earnings Roundup
Lower margins for Smith & Nephew’s (NYSE:SNN) bread-and-butter orthopedics division drove the British company’s third-quarter profits down nearly 3 percent for the three months ended Oct. 1.
Smith & Nephew posted profits of $133 million, or 14.9 cents per share, on sales of $1.03 billion for the quarter – a top-line increase of 9.7 percent when compared with the $941 million in revenues reported for the same period last year. But Q3 2010 profits were $137 million, or 15.4 cents per share.
Medical device investment rose during Q2, even as deal volume fell | Wall Street Beat
Medical device investment deals got fatter and less frequent during the second quarter, as the value of deals grew 9 percent but their number slid 17 percent, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Backers pumped $841 million into med-tech firms with 90 deals during the three months ended June 30, according to the consulting firm’s MoneyTree report. That’s up 26 percent and 3 percent, respectively, over the first quarter. The industry’s share of the venture capital cash spend on life sciences last quarter ticked down to 40 percent, however, compared with Q1 numbers.
