Breast implants get mixed review from FDA

MASSDEVICE ON CALL — The revamped breast implant is safer than the last generation, which was pulled off the market in 1992 over fears of leakage, but the silicon prosthetics still come with risks, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration warned.

The implants are safe in general, the agency said, but complications are common and the implants aren’t going to last forever.

Accentus snaps up speech recognition firm Mrecord

Mrecord was acquired by Canadian company Accentus, which plans to bolster its own software offerings with Mrecord’s speech recognition and transcription technology .

Raleigh, North Carolina-based Mrecord’s medical records technology includes software that can transcribe speech into text. Accentus said that Mrecord’s technology will enhance the Ottawa-based company’s ambulatory care service offering. Financial terms of the deal between the two privately held companies were not disclosed.

GeaCom looks to overcome patient-caregiver language barriers

Chances are, a migraine in Somalia resembles a migraine in South Carolina. But describing those symptoms to a doctor who can’t speak your language can cause its own special brand of headache.

GeaCom Inc., a startup based in Duluth, Minn., is developing an interactive, hand-held device that can provide instant translation between doctor and patient, monitor vital signs and store data in an electronic medical record.

Lost in translation

A two-year survey by Crimson Life Sciences found that the average serious error rate — serious enough to cause harm to patients — was 400 percent higher than the serious error rate for industry best practices.

The Brighton-based translation services provider analyzed 21 languages, dozens of labeling audits and more than a million translated words. The high incidence of error suggests that many medical device makers face substantial liability and recall risks from translations of their labeling, company officials claimed.
