The BIO International Convention is on its way back to Boston, five years after its last visit to the Hub set all-time attendance records.
The conference attracted a record 22,366 visitors back in 2007, but attendance since then has dragged significantly, falling to 20,108 in San Diego in 2008 and to 14,352 this year in Atlanta, according to a BIO International spokesperson.

Today The 2009 BIO International Convention got started in earnest with the opening of the exhibition floor and the kick-off plenary with Sir Elton John.
Elton John is best known as a musician but he is also the founder and chairman of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. The foundation has raised more than $150 million to support HIV/AIDS prevention and service programs in 55 countries around the globe.

The 2009 BIO International Convention opened today in Atlanta at the Georgia World Congress Center with a series of panel discussions, but the real action is on the exhibit floor, where construction is under way of exhibition pavilions for hundreds of companies, along with state and national governments.
The Massachusetts Pavilion is nearly ready for the opening of the show floor tomorrow morning at 10:15. The Pavilion theme for Massachusetts is “The Big Bang: Massachusetts Life Sciences Supercluster.”

The 2009 BioMEDevice conference might be in Boston, but its exhibitors hail from around the country. Wherever they’re from, though, they’re all looking to accomplish the same thing: Build new business.
“This is our first year on the East Coast, so we’re getting the word out,” says Craig Morris, silicon products business unit manager for Minneapolis-based ProMed Molded Products Inc.
Morris tells MassDevice that the 20-year-old medical silicone molding company relies partly on trade shows to develop new business. A down economy, he says, helps sort the wheat from the chaff.

The BioMEDevice conference came to the East Coast for the first time this year, bringing companies from across the medical device industry to a two-day conference and business development forum in Boston.
It’s a chance to showcase the density of the medical industry in New England. Conference organizer Canon Communications boasts that “every medical specialty” is represented by the roughly 265 exhibitors on hand at Boston’s cavernous Convention & Exhibition Center.
