Simbionix buys GMV’s Arthro VR training simulator | Deals Roundup

Simbionix USA Corp. acquired the Arthro VR arthroscopic training simulator line from Spain’s GMV for an undisclosed amount.

The deal broadens Simbionix’s footprint in the orthopedic training arena. The Arthro VR features a line of simulated procedures using fiberglass limb replicas, 3D images and haptic sensation.

Israeli medical device firm IceCure lands in Ohio

Israeli device company IceCure Medical Ltd. scoped Cleveland for its U.S. headquarters, a move the company’s CEO hinted at in February.

IceCure’s lead product, IceSense3, freezes and destroys benign breast tumors using cryoblation, a technique using extreme cold to kill tissue. It won 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration late last year.

The company plans to open its U.S. headquarters at the Cleveland Clinic-led Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center campus on June 1, according to a statement from IceCure.

Simbionix wins FDA 510(k) for simulator software

The Food & Drug Administration granted 510(k) clearance to the PROcedure Rehearsal Studio software made by Cleveland’s Simbionix USA Corp., opening the door to advanced simulation technologies for practicing clinicians.

The software is used to transfer imaging data, such as from a CT scanner, to an output file. It also is used as pre-operative software to simulate and evaluate surgical treatment options. Simbionix makes medical training simulators.

Simbionix’s Colorado outpost cut for consolidation

Medical education company Simbionix USA Corp. plans to relocate employees from Denver, Colo. to consolidate the company’s education division in its newly expanded Cleveland, Ohio headquarters.

While any job growth in Northeast Ohio is certainly welcome news, it’s unclear how many jobs the move will bring. Closely held Simbionix is still working out the details, and an executive wouldn’t say how many workers it employs in Denver.

Simbionix wins grant to develop hysterectomy simulator

The Israeli subsidiary of Simbionix USA and a Florida medical school have received a grant of an unspecified amount to develop a laparoscopic hysterectomy surgery simulator.

The grant comes from the U.S.-Israel Binational Industrial Research and Development Foundation, which promotes technology collaborations between companies and organizations from the two countries.

Simbionix licenses patent foe’s technology to bring infringement claim to a close

Simbionix USA settled patent infringement claims from San Jose, Cal.-based Immersion Corp., by licensing Immersion’s haptics technology for use in medical procedure simulators.

Immersion Corp. makes technology that interfaces with users through the sense of touch. In April 2008, Immersion sued Simbionix in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio for infringing on patents that cover its technology.
