Medical device sector to consolidate?

June 14, 2011 By MassDevice staff Leave a Comment

Historical Trend in US M&A Activities 2005-May 2011

Impending federal excise taxes, downward pricing pressure and declining volumes of big-ticket procedures constitute a triple threat that will drive the medical device industry to consolidate, according to a PricewaterhouseCoopers report.

The total value of health care deals over the past 12 months rose 40 percent, according to the consulting giant’s “U.S. Mid-Year M&A Outlook.” That trend is likely to continue, the report predicts.

Industry reports sound alarm on medtech innovation

January 24, 2011 By MedCity News Leave a Comment

Funding

PricewaterhouseCoopers, Moneytree, and the BioEnterprise delivered bad news for the medical device community this week: Investment has slipped, the United States’ dominance is eroding, and nimbleness in emerging markets poses a long-term threat to United States as the leader in developing new innovative medical devices.

Marching orders are clear and unsurprising. We need more innovation, talent, financial incentives, investment, and sleeker and faster regulation. The question is, even if can do all or most of these things well, will it be enough to compete with the speed of growth in countries like China, India and Brazil?

The U.S. is quickly losing ground to emerging markets in medical technology innovation, according to a new study from PricewaterhouseCoopers.

"The nature of innovation is changing as developing nations become the leading markets for smaller, faster, more affordable devices that enable delivery of care anywhere and help bend the cost curve downward," PwC wrote in its latest Medical Technology Innovation Scorecard.
