Philips buys Israeli imaging archives firm CDP Medical

Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE:PHG), already one of the world’s largest medical imaging equipment makers, expanded its footprint in the picture archiving and communication systems space by paying an undisclosed amount for Israel’s CDP Medical Ltd.

CDP, a subsidiary of Medtechnica Ltd. (TASE:MEDI), makes PACS technology that Philips plans to use to augment its own iSite PACS offering, according to Philips Healthcare CEO Steve Rusckowski.

"This is an important step on our journey to complete our range of clinical informatics and patient care solutions," Rusckowski said in prepared remarks.

A month after Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. (NYSE:PHG) sued Zoll Medical Corp. (NSDQ:ZOLL) in a patent infringement case, the Zoll fought back with a lawsuit of its own.

Philips accused the Chelmsford, Mass.-based firm of violating a string of automated external defibrillator patents with its AED Plus and AED Pro devices. Now Zoll, in a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for Massachusetts, is accusing Philips of violating five of its patents with the HeartStart MRx, HeartStart XL, and HeartStart AED lines.

Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. (NYSE:PHG) is suing Zoll Medical Corp. (NSDQ:ZOLL), accusing the Chelmsford, Mass.-based firm of violating a string of automated external defibrillator patents with its AED Plus and AED Pro devices.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for Massachusetts, alleges that Zoll willfully violated the 15 patents despite Philips notifying the company of the alleged infringements in November 2008, according to court documents.

The Philips Healthcare Global Advanced Imaging Innovation Center could bolster northeast Ohio’s reputation as a hub for innovation in medical imaging technology.

The $38.4 million partnership of Philips, University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University — supported by a $5 million Ohio Third Frontier grant — was announced last week. Philips, which is supplying $33.4 million of the funding, is also considering an investment of a similar amount in a second phase of the center.

Boston Scientific Corp. (NYSE:BSX) collaborated with Philips Healthcare (NYSE:PHG) and Siemens Medical Solutions (NYSE:SI) to make its iLab ultrasound imaging system compatible with their X-ray devices.

The Natick, Mass.-based medical device maker successfully tested the integration of its intravascular ultrasound device with the Philips Allura Xper and the Siemens Axiom Artis and Artis zee interventional X-ray systems for cardiac catheterization laboratories or radiology suites.

Orders for equipment produced by Philips Healthcare rose in North America for the first time in 18 months during early 2010, as the Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE:PHG) division recorded just more than $1.8 billion in first-quarter revenues.

The 7 percent jump in sales, compared with year-ago levels, was driven by strong growth in Customer Services and Clinical Care Systems, although all business segments within the Andover, Mass.-based healthcare unit enjoyed higher comparable sales during the quarter. Sales outside North America grew by 16 percent, primarily in emerging markets, the Dutch company said.

Philips Healthcare wins $77 million Defense Dept. contract

Philips Healthcare won a $77 million contract from the U.S. Dept. of Defense to provide its patient monitoring systems to the U.S. military.

The contract will see the Andover, Mass.-based unit of Royal Philips Electronics NV (NYSE:PHG) provide the systems, along with accessories, spare parts and training, to the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and federal civilian agencies.

North American healthcare market continues to drag down Philips Healthcare

The U.S. healthcare market continues to under-perform for Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE:PHG), Europe’s largest consumer goods company and the global leader in patient monitoring systems.

The Dutch company, which houses its U.S. healthcare division’s headquarters in Andover, Mass., reported that fourth-quarter sales dropped by almost 7 percent, to $3.4 billion, for its healthcare division during the fourth quarter, compared to $3.6 billion for the same period last year. However, despite slower sales, the division still reported strong bottom-line growth, posting a $452 million EBIDTA profit, compared to $343 million for the same period last year.
