Abbott closes OptiMedica buyout

Abbott (NYSE:ABT) said it closed the buyout of OptiMedica Corp. it announced in July, paying $250 million up front with another $150 million on the table if development, regulatory and sales milestones are met.

The buyout expands the Chicago-area healthcare giant’s Abbott Medical Optics ophthalmology unit by adding femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery to its portfolio.

Abbott acquires IDEV Technologies, OptiMedica

Abbott (NYSE:ABT) said it agreed to acquire a pair of companies in the peripheral stent and ophthalmic space for a total of up to $710 million.

The Chicago-ares medical device company said it inked a deal worth $310 million for Webster, Texas-based IDEV Technologies and its Supera Veritas stent for treating peripheral artery disease.

Diabetes: Intarcia pulls down $210M for drug-device combo| Wall Street Beat

Intarcia Therapeutics said it’s reeled in financing worth a total of $210 million to further its drug-device combination treatment for Type II diabetes.

The Hayward, Calif.-based company, which is moving its headquarters to Boston, said the cash will also help facilitate the move.

The somo.v Abus device, which is set to undergo agency review on April 11, 2012, is already FDA-cleared for diagnostic use as an adjunct to a mammogram.

Philips lands 510(k) for HeartNavigator valve replacement | Regulatory Roundup

Updated Dec. 23, 2011, to correct that the HeartNavigator is inserted through a small incision in the leg, not in the chest.

HeartNavigatorPhilips’ HeartNavigator aortic valve replacement system uses x-ray imaging to guide the valve to the heart.

Philips Healthcare (NYSE:PHG) landed FDA clearance for its HeartNavigator heart valve replacement system.

Medical City Dallas Hospital became the first U.S. hospital to use the system, which was launched in Europe in the first quarter of this year.

St. Jude Medical Inc. (NYSE:STJ) announced a med-tech first with a European CE Mark approval for its Genesis implanted neurostimulation device for patients with chronic migraines.

Genesis, which is the first device of its kind to win regulatory approval in any market, provides peripheral nerve stimulation to the occipital nerves to manage migraines. Small electrical leads are placed under the skin and connected to a device which produces pulses of stimulation.
