Topera Medical hires former Boston Scientific VP, opens Beantown HQ
MASSDEVICE ON CALL — Topera Medical, a once-stealthy medical device start-up formerly based in San Diego, hired a former Boston Scientific Corp. (NYSE:BSX) vice president and moved clear across the country.
The firm, now based in Lexington, Mass., is looking to commercialize technology developed by Dr. Sanjiv Narayan at the University of California, San Diego. It hired former Boston Scientific VP Edward Kerslake to be its CEO in December 2010, according to Xconomy.

Gen-Probe picks up GTI for $53 million
Gen-Probe Inc. (NSDQ:GPRO) bought Waukesha, Wis.-based GTI Diagnostics in a self-funded $53 million cash deal.
The acquisition allows the San Diego-based company to expand its transplant diagnostics business, according to Gen-Probe.
Gen-Probe’s Q4 sales, earnings rise
Gen-Probe Inc. (NSDQ:GPRO) posted fourth-quarter sales of $128.9 million for the three months ended Dec. 31, 2009, up 27.2 percent compared with $109.1 million during the same period in 2008. Net income rose 13.6 percent to $24 million, compared with $21.1 million during Q4 2008:
Becton, Dickinson and Gen-Probe in new patent fight
Gen-Probe Inc. wants to put Becton, Dickinson & Co. to the acid test. Specifically, probing how BD tests nucleic acid to spot viruses.
The San Diego-based diagnostics company recently filed suit accusing its New Jersey-based rival of undermining several of its patents and using them in the BD Viper system. The complaint seeks a jury trial and asks for unspecified monetary damages as well as injuctive relief.
