EuroPCR: Disappearing stents and bioabsorbable polymers

Disappearing technology had a strong presence at this year’s EuroPCR conference in Paris, with rival device makers demonstrating the safety and efficacy of their next-generation stents.

Elixir Medical unveiled 1st-in-man clinical results for its DESolve fully bioabsorbable drug-eluting scaffold system, a stent made from a proprietary polymer and coated in novolimus. The entire stent is designed to be absorbed by the body in 1-2 years.

TCT 2011: Benefits for Edwards’ valve patients increase at the two-year mark

Patients treated with Edwards Lifesciences’ (NYSE:EW) Sapien heart valve had a lower mortality rate and spent less time in hospitals at the two-year mark, according to the data released at this year’s Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics symposium.

The Partner trial consisted of patients with aortic stenosis, randomized to receive a Sapien valve with transcatheter aortic valve replacement surgery or traditional open-heart surgery.

MASSDEVICE ON CALL — Olympus Corp. (TYO:7733) launched a probe into the acquisition fee scandal that has seen its stock plunge by more than half.

Olympus Corp.’s $2.2 billion acquisition of Gyrus Group in 2008 raised eyebrows after the technology giant’s recently sacked CEO Michael Woodford revealed that the company paid $687 million to financial advisors mediating the deal.

Elixir Medical Corporation, a developer of product platforms that combine innovative medical devices with potent pharmaceuticals for site-specific therapies, announced the initiation of patient enrollment in the EXCELLA BD Randomized Clinical Trial designed to evaluate Elixir’s next generation Novolimus Eluting Coronary Stent System (CSS) with bioabsorbable coating, the Elixir DESyne BD Novolimus Eluting CSS. The first cases were enrolled by Professor Joachim Schofer from the Universitäres Herz-und Gefäβzentrum in Hamburg, Germany and Dr. Karl E. Hauptmann from the Krankenhaus der Barmherzigen Brüder in Trier, Germany.
