Dual-modality breast tomosynthesis and automated ultrasound: University of Virginia Cancer Center researchers developed a hybrid breast imaging device which combines three-dimensional anatomical (structural) imaging and 3D biological (functional) imaging into one integrated device. The system uses 3D digital X-ray breast tomosynthesis and 3D molecular breast imaging tomosynthesis, a recently developed technique that uses intravenously injected tracers that are more readily absorbed by malignant lesions.

Ethicon entertains offer for breast care business
Ethicon Endo-Surgery Inc. is entertaining an offer from a private equity-backed holding company for its breast care business, including the MammoTome biopsy system.
The Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) subsidiary has until June 15 to decide whether to accept the offer from Devicor Medical Products, a portfolio company of GTCR Golder Rauner LLC. Specific terms of the offer were not disclosed.
Trial starts in Hologic patent infringement suit against SenoRx
A jury trial is under way in a lawsuit filed last year by Hologic Inc. (NSDQ:HOLX) against SenoRx (NSDQ:SENO), alleging that SenoRx infringed patents covering Hologic’s MammoSite breast cancer radiation therapy system with its Contura device.
iCad’s breast biopsy software gets PMA clearance
iCad Inc. got pre-market approval from the Food & Drug Administration for software it says will locate the best point to perform a needle biopsy of the breast.
The Nashua, N.H.-based computer-aided detection products maker said its PrecisionPoint product won 510(k) pre-market notification clearance from the federal watchdog agency March 31.
PrecisionPoint will be integrated into iCad’s CADvue breast MRI image review software.
