Covidien Plc. (NYSE:COV) won an appeal of a trial judge’s decision to back Becton Dickinson and Company’s (NYSE:BDX) patent infringement claim.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington on Thursday tossed the $58 million damage award against the Mansfield, Mass. based medical products conglomerate, formerly Tyco Healthcare, over safety syringes.
The tax man took a bite out of Becton, Dickinson and Company’s (NYSE:BDX) bottom line during the third quarter.
The Franklin Lakes, N.J.-based medical device and diagnostic kit-maker reported $306.9 million in net income, or $1.29 per diluted share, on $1.88 billion in sales during the three months ended June 30, a 10 percent slide from the $341 million, or $1.39 per diluted share profit on sales of $1.82 billion during the same period last year.
Becton, Dickinson & Co. (NYSE:BDX) named the former CEO of advertising giant JWT Worldwide to its board of directors.
Christopher Jones is the former head of one of the world’s largest advertising agencies, who retired in 2001 after 24 years at the firm.
BD chairman and CEO Edward Ludwig said in prepared remarks that experience will help the company as it looks to boost its footprint in “growing and emerging” markets.
Net income grew 14 percent to nearly $300 million at Becton, Dickinson & Co. (NYSE:BDX) during the company’s fiscal second quarter that ended March 31.
The $1.24-a-share profit topped consensus analyst opinion by a penny, although revenues fell just short of the $1.85 billion Wall Street estimate for the quarter. BD officials said they now anticipate revenues for the fiscal year ending in September to rise 6 percent to around $7.59 billion — or about $70 million below the company’s previous forecast due to currency fluctuations.
Becton, Dickinson & Co. (NYSE:BDX) voluntarily expanded the Class I recall of millions of its Q-Syte Luer access devices to include its Nexiva intravenous catheter systems.
The recall, initiated last October, was prompted by complaints that air was introduced in to device through its septum’s bottom disk, potentially leading to air embolisms or leakage that could cause serious injury or death. The Nexiva devices contain two of the Q-Syte components containing the defect, which was caused by a "manufacturing deviation," BD said.
Boosted by a $143 million jump in sales for its BD Medical segment, along with smaller rises for its diagnostics and biosciences segments, first-quarter revenues jumped 11.6 percent over year-ago levels at Becton, Dickinson and Co. (NYSE:BDX) during the three months ended Dec. 31, 2009.
Growth was strongest in sales of medical surgical systems, which climbed nearly $80 million, or 16.6 percent, to $560 million. Pharmaceutical systems and diabetes care also posted double-digit percentage gains within the medical segment during the quarter.
Becton, Dickinson & Co. (NYSE:BDX) is boosting its contribution to the Haitian earthquake relief effort tenfold, after humanitarian aid groups relayed the desperate need for more medical supplies to treat the millions of people affected by the magnitude 7.0 temblor.
BD originally pledged to provide $500,000 worth of of medical equipment for the relief effort. But after receiving pleas from on-the-ground relief providers, the Franklin Lakes, N.J.-based company decided to up that amount to $5 million worth of supplies.
Becton, Dickinson & Co. (NYSE:BDX) is donating $550,000 to support relief efforts in Haiti and pledged to ship another $500,000 worth of medical equipment to the island nation, which was devastated by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake Jan. 12.
The Franklin Lakes, N.J.-based medical device maker said it will split $250,000 between the American Red Cross and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. Another $250,000 will go to Partners in Health, AmeriCares, the Catholic Medical Mission Board, Direct Relief International, Heart to Heart International, Project HOPE and Save the Children.
Caliper Life Sciences Inc. (NSDQ:CALP) settled its patent infringement beef with a recent Becton, Dickinson & Co. (NYSE:BDX) acquisition by striking a deal to license its microfluidics technology to BD.
The Hopkinton, Mass.-based lab equipment maker agreed to license the patent portfolio to Franklin Lakes, N.J.-based BD for an undisclosed amount, thereby settling a lawsuit filed by HandyLab Inc. in the U.S. District Court for Eastern Michigan.
Gen-Probe Inc. wants to put Becton, Dickinson & Co. to the acid test. Specifically, probing how BD tests nucleic acid to spot viruses.
The San Diego-based diagnostics company recently filed suit accusing its New Jersey-based rival of undermining several of its patents and using them in the BD Viper system. The complaint seeks a jury trial and asks for unspecified monetary damages as well as injuctive relief.
