Will uncertainty bring down another cardiac implant market?

MASSDEVICE ON CALL — Uncertainty surrounding the use of cardiac stents and angioplasty balloons may lead to a market backlash against the devices and their makers.

At least 4 percent and up to 12 percent of percutaneous coronary interventions may be implanted outside of industry-recommended guidelines, according to an article published in the Journal of the American Medical Assn. yesterday.

Mass. Life Sciences Center doles out another $3.8 million in loans

MASSDEVICE ON CALL — The Mass. Life Sciences Center, a quasi-public agency that oversees state dollars allocated toward increasing the life sciences industry’s footprint in the Bay State, doled out another $3.8 million in “accelerator” loans.

The program is designed to provide a boost to early-stage life science companies that the center’s scientific advisory board deems to have a high potential for commercialization, rapid growth and the ability to raise substantial capital.

Japan earthquake: Medical device companies donate millions for relief efforts

Accuray lines up $277 million TomoTherapy buyout | Acquisitions roundup

Accuray Inc. (NSDQ:ARAY) looks set to acquire radiation treatment firm TomoTherapy Inc. (NSDQ:TOMO) in a deal worth $277 million.

The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based radiosurgery company signed an agreement to buy TomoTherapy for $4.80 per share in cash and stock, a nearly 31 percent premium over its $3.67 closing price on Friday, March 4.

The companies believe their technologies complement one another in that they can serve overlapping patient populations.
