First hybrid MRI/PET scanner cleared by FDA | Regulatory Roundup

The FDA announced today that it cleared the Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) Biograph, the first device to perform positron emission tomography scanning and magnetic resonance imaging scanning at the same time.
PET scans allow physicians to see how organs are functioning by injecting radioactive tracers into a patient’s blood stream and MRIs use magnetic fields and radiowaves to create detailed images of organs, soft tissues, bones and other body structures.

Access Scientific Inc., makers of the Picc Wand and Power Wand IV catheters, closed a $10 million equity financing round.
Investment was led by CAC, a private equity firm, and followed by Access Scientific’s previous investors.
The company’s IV catheters are designed reduce patient discomfort by allowing blood tests to be drawn and fluids and medications to be delivered through a single device, which can last the duration of an entire hospital stay.
FDA clears Abbott’s wireless handheld testing system | Regulatory roundup

The FDA granted Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT) 510(k) clearance for the wireless version of its i-STAT 1 point of care testing system.
Healthcare providers use the Abbott Park, Ill.-based company’s handheld i-STAT 1 device to transmit diagnostic test results from the patient directly to electronic health records where doctor can access the data.
