Salaries for medical device sales representatives are up 9% in 4 years and 5% over last year, according to a survey of some 1,200 medtech sales agents by MedReps.com.
The average medical device sales salary tops $158,000 (median $145,000), including commissions and bonus, according to the jobs board’s survey of more than 3,000 medical sales professionals. Direct sales jobs paid more than distribution or service provider sales jobs, according to MedReps.com. Experience beat out age as a factor, the company said, with the highest average medical device sales salary ($191,000) going to those with between 11 and 20 years on the job.
The survey also showed that women in surgical and medical device sales, who accounted for about 10% of respondents and 20% of directors or VPs, earn 84% of the salaries of men. That disparity skewed the average income for men "significantly higher," according to the jobs board.
But as lucrative as the medical device sales field is this year, sales jobs in health IT and healthcare software are even better, with average total income of $172,891 (median $165,000), according to the survey. Biotech and biopharma sales reps are earning an average of $154,000 (median $155,000), the jobs board reported.
