With FDA approval in hand, St. Jude Medical (NYSE:STJ) launched a new and improved ablation catheter that features a GPS-like body navigation system called MediGuide.
The St. Paul, Minn.-based medical device company acquired the guided image technology when it bought Israel-based MediGuide in 2008. St. Jude has since integrated the imaging system into its ablation catheters, which are used to treat specific irregular heartbeats.
MediGuide uses 3-D magnetic tracking to locate and visualize a catheter in the body, and is the 1st technology that can reduce a patient’s exposure to radiation during a catheter ablation heart procedure, according to the company.
So far, St. Jude has integrated MediGuide with 2 of its ablation catheter products, the Safire Duo and the Cool Path Duo, both irrigated tip ablation catheters with bidirectional maneuverability.
"The new MediGuide Enabled Ablation Catheters expand the utility of the MediGuide System, which is an important platform that provides clinicians with the ability to reduce the duration of radiation exposure and improve the accuracy and consistency of procedures," Frank Callaghan, president ablation technologies division, said in prepared remarks.
