Sparrow BioAcoustics announced that it launched its Stethophone software that enables using a smartphone as a stethoscope.
The software turns smartphones into medical-grade stethoscopes. It allows users to capture, analyze and share critical heart health data with medical personnel from any location.
Sparrow won FDA clearance for the downloadable application in June 2023. That clearance made it the first-ever FDA-cleared smartphone stethoscope software-as-a-medical-device (SaMD). It picked up another FDA clearance for use by consumers, empowering individuals to take an active role in their heart health.
Stethophone utilizes the built-in microphone of a smartphone to capture the nuanced sounds of the heart. It filters the sounds through bioacoustics engineering to provide clear, medical-grade diagnostic signals. Sparrow believes its technology could help with the detection and diagnosis of routine and difficult cardiac conditions sooner and with more ease.
On top of the technology that powers Stethophone, Sparrow offers advanced visualizations. These enable practitioners to understand how to interpret the diagnostics originating from the device. Some of these patterns and anomalies may not be as easily discernible by conventional cardiac diagnostics.
Sparry already has a next-generation version of Stethophone in development, aiming to integrate AI functionalities.
“We are at the forefront of a revolution in personalized heart health,” said Mark Attila Opauzsky, CEO of Sparrow BioAcoustics. “Stethophone embodies our commitment to provide everyone the power, agency and access to fight heart disease right in their own hands. Launching on Valentine’s Day symbolizes our dedication to heart health and the love and care we invest in our products and the people they serve.”
