The company shared news of the new plant, located in San José, in a post on LinkedIn. It marks another recent positive development for the company, which agreed to be acquired for $13.1 billion by Johnson & Johnson last week.
Shockwave’s LinkedIn post read: “We’re thrilled to celebrate the grand opening of our #ShockwaveIVL production plant in San José, Costa Rica! The momentous event was attended by our CEO, Doug Godshall, as well as the President of the Republic of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves Robles. Welcome to #ShockNation, Costa Rica team!”
According to local news outlet La Republica, the company’s investment in Costa Rica totals $40 million by 2028. The report also said that this is the first Shockwave Medical plant built outside the U.S.
La Republica said Shockwave plans to hire 1,200 people in the next three years at the plant.
According to the report, Luis Morales, Shockwave’s SVP of global operations, said the new plant strengthens production capacity while contributing to the local economy. Morales also reportedly said the facility accentuates the company’s commitment to technological advancement in cardiovascular disease treatment. The report said the company recognized Costa Rica’s talent and favorable business environment as part of its decision to start operations there.
