Boston, Mass., May 10, 2010 – Avant Product Development, a division of Avant Development Group achieved considerable success recently with phase I and phase II programs in replacing nitinol mechanisms and support structures with biocompatible shape-memory polymers.
Avant has been exploring this area of innovation representing a next generation of devices that not only can perform to exacting standards that doctors and surgeons demand, but will also allow new applications and uses for existing device designs. It also may allow device use in environments where the material properties of nitinol prove a disadvantage or preclude its use.
Because of its unique properties, nitinol has been and continues to be used in a myriad of medical devices, including catheters, stents and dentistry. However some new and exciting polymers that possess many of nitinol’s properties are now available and await only the engineer’s imagination to be put to good use.
“While, of course, it will not replace all nitinol applications, some very exciting and innovative opportunities exist in using this technology to expand the use and application of devices for new treatments, enhanced efficacy rates or for converging technologies, particularly with disposables” said Mr. Rafael Diana, Managing Director of Avant.
Avant’s work has primarily been in the cardiovascular, minimally invasive, surgical and implantable sectors, “but there may very well be a myriad of applications waiting to be explored he stated.”
Among the many advantages that can be achieved are significantly lower material and manufacturing costs, simpler supply chains, and the potential for customized material movement, deployment systems, stored mechanical energy and memory.
