RefleXion inks AI partnership for cancer treatment planning

RefleXion Medical announced today that it signed a licensing agreement with Limbus AI to incorporate software into radiation treatment planning.

The agreement enables the integration of the Limbus Contour automated contour software into the RefleXion X1 system. X1 uses biology-guided radiotherapy (BgRT) technology. It enables a PET radiotracer to create a unified motion management solution for one or multiple tumors. This produces emissions that signal cancer location as the tracer binds to tumor cells.

Integrating the software into X1 could reduce a significant bottleneck in the patient treatment planning process, RefleXion says. This involves delineating the tumor target from surrounding critical organs and other healthy tissue. Accuray entered into a similar partnership with Limbus AI nearly two years ago.

Limbus Contour uses clinically validated, deep-learning segmentation algorithms with a high level of accuracy. The algorithms reduce human error and help ensure precise radiation delivery to target areas while avoiding organs at risk (OARs). In this deal, it can utilize high-quality CT images produced by X1 to improve precision and deliver reliable results.

“Contouring is one of the most time-consuming tasks in radiotherapy planning, and often contributes to treatment delays,” said Sam Mazin, co-founder and chief technology officer at RefleXion. “We have found Limbus Contour’s AI-driven solution to be a technology leader in speed, accuracy and versatility. Depending on the complexity of the treatment plan, we expect contouring time reductions of up to 80%, thus ensuring that patients receive timely treatment.

“Furthermore, this sets the stage for adapting the treatment plan immediately prior to delivery to leverage the unique and rich anatomic and biologic information produced by the X1 in image-guided and Scintix procedures.”
