Plexus Corp. (NSDQ:PLXS) is planning to dramatically expand its footprint in the Xiamen Xiangyu free trade zone in China.
The Neenah, Wis.-based manufacturing services firm entered into an agreement to buy land to build a 180,000 square foot facility next to its current plant, the company announced today.
Plexus also touted news that its current facility in the free trade zone won certification from the State Food and Drug Administration of China to begin manufacturing finished "Class I and II" medical devices for the company’s customers that sell into Chinese markets.
"The SFDA certification in our Xiamen facility will allow us to further enhance our Medical service offerings to global customers seeking end-market fulfillment of medical products into China. We are excited about the opportunity this provides for us to expand our reach in the People’s Republic of China, a growing medical device market," said Plexus Asia Pacific regional president YJ Lim in prepared remarks.
The company said it expects the new plant, which will also be devoted, in part, to medical products, to begin production in the latter half of 2012.
