Personnel moves: Teleflex CEO Black bows out abruptly

February 1, 2011 By MassDevice staff

Here’s the latest personnel changes from medical device, diagnostics and life science companies around the nation.

  • Teleflex CEO Black bows out abruptly
Teleflex Inc. (NYSE:TFX) today announced that Benson Smith, 63, a Teleflex board member since 2005, has been named chairman, president and CEO, effective immediately. He replaces Jeffrey Black, 51, who has resigned by mutual agreement with the company’s board. Smith spent 25 years at C.R. Bard Inc. (NYSE:BCR) , a leading multinational medical device company, most recently as president and COO and a member of the board. Smith is also chairman of Zoll Medical Corp. (NSDQ:ZOLL) and a board member at Rochester Medical Corp. (NSDQ:ROCM)

In a note to investors, Leerink Swan analyst Richard Newitter wrote, “While the leadership transition is sudden, and unexpected, we are inclined to view the change as generally positive. Smith’s long-time medical devices/supplies leadership experience… should be a positive asset for TFX as the transformation into a pure play medical devices firm continues.” In a conference call today, TFX executives said that the leadership transition is unrelated to any specific regulatory changes or overall changes in the marketplace, the analyst noted.
