Optos Inc. is turning its eye toward Asia with plans for a less-expensive version of its retinal imaging device, CEO Roy Davis told Bloomberg.
U.K.-based Optos, which houses its North American headquarters in Marlborough, Mass., makes the Panoramic200, a laser ophthalmoscope that can produce a high-resolution image of the retina to detect conditions such as retinal detachment, glaucoma and cataracts.
Davis told Bloomberg that the “big opportunity for us 12, 18, 24 months out is moving into the Far East.”
The company must make a cheaper version of its product to compensate for the low cost of eye exams in Asia, he added, a market the company is actively courting.
Davis also said the company does about 90 percent of its business in the U.S.
