MassDevice.com Personnel MovesIlluminOss Medical said today it picked ex-OmniGuide sales & marketing veep Manny Avila as its new chief exec.

Prior to his time as sales & marketing veep with OmniGuide, Avila served as veep of commercial operations and surgical solutions in Europe for Covidien, and had management roles at Aspect Medical, Synthes Inc. and Haemonetics (NYSE:HAE), IlluminOss said.

“We are pleased to bring someone of Mr. Avila’s caliber on at such a pivotal time for IlluminOss. Through his extensive experience in the medical device industry, he has cultivated the knowledge and skillset we are looking for to drive adoption of the IlluminOss System as a minimally invasive alternative to traditional facture repair methods,” CTO Robert Rabiner said in a press release.

IlluminOss said the addition will aid the company as it moves towards FDA approval of its orthopedic fracture repair system, which features light-curable polymer contained in a balloon catheter to help with bone stabilization.

“We are confident that IlluminOss’ technology has what it takes to redefine and improve the way complex fracture treatment can be approached. We have been very selective in the development of our team to ensure that we have the right people at the helm to continue to advance IlluminOss, and Mr. Avila will be a valuable addition,” board member Fouad Azzam said in prepared remarks.

IlluminOss said it is currently running its 1st trial aiming for FDA approval of the device.
