The facility, announced yesterday, is also the new U.S. headquarters for the Tokyo-based company’s medical business
Olympus said in a news release that it identified its therapeutic solutions division (TSD) as a strategic focus for growth, shifting its global head of TSD from Tokyo to the U.S. to access a key medical industry region and generate growth through improved business opportunities.
The 150,000 ft2 facility in Westborough will be home to Olympus’ U.S. TSD employees and those formerly reporting to its Image Stream Medical (ISM) facility in Littleton, Mass., except for manufacturing employees, who will remain in Littleton.
Olympus’ Westborough location will serve as one of several R&D hubs, with the Olympus Continuum Training & Education Center set to offer hands-on learning opportunities, the company said.
The facility will offer an immersive environment for in-person or virtual integrated operating room demonstrations while allowing Olympus to build relationships with potential future employees in the greater Boston area.
Nacho Abia, Chief Operating Officer of Olympus Corporation, said, “The U.S. market continues to be the largest in the world because of growing demand for minimally invasive treatment and surgery and the need for remote collaboration under COVID-19, so it’s natural that we decided to combine all functions in Massachusetts in one place to facilitate agility and collaboration,” Olympus COO Nacho Abia said in the release. “This agile and globally-connected way of business will enhance our overall business competitiveness.”
