Olympus announced today that it launched Thunderbeat II, its next-generation hybrid energy device for soft tissue management.
The company designed Thunderbeat II to deliver faster, more hemostatic dissection and large vessel transection. It extends to both laparoscopic and open surgery.
Olympus plans to make Thunderbeat II available in Europe beginning this month, then launch in Japan later this year. It plans to begin a global rollout in the U.S. and other regions once it receives the necessary regulatory approvals.
Thunderbeat II delivers faster hemostatic dissection and more secure vessel sealing compared to the previous generation from Olympus. It features a refined probe design that minimizes thermal impact on surrounding tissue. Olympus also added the versatility of three energy modes, including a new ultrasonic setting. This supports surgeons in technically challenging procedures and enables them to adapt to changing clinical conditions without interrupting the procedure to exchange instruments.
Other output modes include hybrid energy (Seal & Cut Mode) for fast, precise hemostatic dissection, and advanced bipolar energy (SEAL MODE) for vessel pre-sealing and spot hemostasis. The new ultrasonic energy offers fine dissection in anatomical spaces when it requires cutting without bipolar energy.
The system also has a refined slim probe and jaw for accuracy, plus a new thermal shield at the distal tip. This reduces the risk of unintended heat damage to surrounding tissues and vessels. Thunderbeat II also has an improved ergonomic handle to reduce the grip force required to operate the jaws. This handle provides audible and haptic feedback to confirm full closure. Additionally, the system introduces a cordless transducer for freedom of movement.
Olympus claims that Thunderbeat II gives surgeons “even more features and greater versatility than ever before.”
“Built to support surgeons in complex surgical procedures, Thunderbeat II underscores Olympus’ commitment to advancing hybrid energy technology. We are excited to enhance our surgical energy portfolio with its introduction, as it is designed to address surgeons’ needs and improve clinical outcomes” said Phil Roy, Olympus surgical deputy GM and Surgical Devices global business unit leader.
