Olympus launches Olysense AI-powered colorectal polyp detection platform

Olympus announced today that it launched its Olysense platform with Caddie medical device software for early colorectal polyp detection.

The rollout marks the introduction of Olympus’ first computer-aided detection (CADe) solution powered by AI. Caddie, a cloud-based software platform, uses AI to support early detection, enhance clinical outcomes and improve patient care.

According to Olympus, the demand for endoscopic evaluations continues to rise, meaning workloads, administrative burdens, budget constraints and staff shortages do, too. Its AI-based, data-driven solution can offer opportunities to address the rising demands with efficient screening and early detection of colon cancer.

Caddie, trained on a robust dataset, aids in the detection of high-risk, hard-to-find lesions. It analyzes colonoscopy video frames to help identify lesions, including high-risk types like large polyps and hard-to-detect ones like sessile serrated lesions (SSLs). The software integrates with the Olympus EVIS X1 and EVIS Exera III endoscopy systems.

Through the Olysense platform, Olympus aims to integrate clinical and operational solutions. It hopes to provide data connectivity across the GI unit and integration with hospital systems to create an intelligent endoscopy ecosystem. The company also plans to expand the platform with new capabilities to meet clinician needs worldwide.

Earlier this year, the company noted increased development and expansion efforts for its Intelligent Endoscopy Ecosystem with the Olysense platform. The technology harnesses digital capabilities to connect legacy endoscopy devices, robotics and digital solutions. Olympus said the strategic shift enables it to move from a hardware-centric model to a dynamic model driven by continuous software enhancements.

“With the Olysense platform, we are taking a meaningful step forward in helping patients receive early, accurate diagnoses,” said Keith Boettiger, corporate officer, head of Gastrointestinal Solutions Division, Olympus Corporation. “Our goal is simple: to give clinicians the advanced tools that make it easy to find and assess challenging lesions early, make confident, informed decisions, and provide their patients with the best possible care.”
