Coronary stent
A new report found an additional 51 patients may have received unnecessary stenting ordered by two Pennsylvania.
The new cases make for a total of 200 patients with questionable stents ordered by doctors Ehad Morcos and George Bou Samra, now ex-employees of Westmoreland Hospital in Greenburg, Pa.
An outside review of stent implants performed by Morcos and Samra found that among 520 patients who received coronary stents in 2009 51 did not have enough plaque build-up to merit stent implantation, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
A March report uncovered 149 potentially unnecessary stents in 2010. Morcos and Samra ordered more than 30 percent of the hospital’s stent procedures last year.
