Millipore taps new life sciences VP

August 13, 2009 By MassDevice staff

Millipore Corp. tapped its former business development director, John Sweeney, to lead its life sciences division.

Sweeney, most recently strategy and marketing services vice president for the Billerica, Mass.-based lab equipment maker’s bioscience unit, hired on in 2003 as Millipore’s strategy and corporate development director.

{IMAGELEFT:http://www.massdevice.com/sites/default/wp-content/uploads/headshots/Sweeney_John_85x85.jpg}Millipore said Sweeney helped drive a string of acquisitions in both positions, as the company executed its $1.4 billion buyout of Serologicals and the acquisitions of Guava and Epitome during those tenures.

Sweeney will presumably work closely with Ram Ramakrishnan, recently named Millipore’s strategy and development VP.

The company posted a 1 percent second-quarter sales decline, but still manages to boost net income nearly 6 percent. Sales were $408.6 million during the three months ended July 4, but quarterly net income rose to $40.4 million.
