The so-called Ice Bucket Challenge has reached the medtech sphere in a big way, with Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) CEO Omar Ishrak getting in on the viral video phenomenon with a short video showing him pouring a bucket of ice water over his head for charity.
Ishrak posted the video in response to a challenge from GE Healthcare (NYSE:GE) exec Agnes Berzsenyi. In turn, he nominated Medtronic strategy & business development SVP Geoffrey Martha, former chairman & CEO Bill George and Aetna chairman, president & CEO Mark Betolini to do the same.
Individuals, celebrities, politicians and CEOs are taking part in the worldwide charity movement, in which someone who has been "challenged" has 24 hours to douse themselves with a bucket of ice-water on camera to raise awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis research.
The movement has drawn the likes of Bill Gates, Robert Downey Junior and Lady Gaga, and has raised more than $15 million already this year, according to the ALS Assn.
